WAUKESHA, Wisc. — As Susan Crawford continues to peddle lies about Brad Schimel and Wisconsin’s brave law enforcement officials that worked to clear the state’s decades-old backlog of rape kits, the voters deserve to hear the truth. Over the weekend, Brad Schimel penned an opinion piece in The Waukesha Freeman. You can check it out here or you can read excerpts below highlighting one of the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s biggest accomplishments in recent history and why Brad Schimel spearheaded this initiative as Attorney General.
“In August 2019, a Waupaca County jury convicted Leroy Whittenberger on three counts of second-degree sexual assault and he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the rape of a 17-year-old girl. That young woman received justice and another child predator was taken off our streets because of the Wisconsin Sexual Assault Kit Initiative — a program that I spearheaded as attorney general. The Wisconsin Sexual Assault Kit Initiative ensured that previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits from both hospitals and law enforcement were processed and tested. Under previous administrations, for over two decades, thousands of rape kits from sexual assault victims were left untested and neglected in storage closets across the state. Some of these tests contained vital evidence that helped put away dangerous criminals. One of my proudest achievements as your attorney general was demanding action and successfully clearing over 4,000 of these tests.”
. . .
“The Wisconsin Sexual Assault Kit Initiative is a testament to our collective efforts, helping hundreds of victims and their families receive long overdue justice and closure on dark chapters in their lives. By the time I left office in 2019, we had not only established and implemented the program, but also created a foolproof blueprint for the incoming administration to continue to deliver justice for victims.”
. . .
“If you want the truth, talk to your local sheriff and they’ll tell you the work we did to protect victims, lock up criminals, and deliver justice.”
